Yes, Lord! VBS 2012

This year our parish didn't host a Vacation Bible School (we'd gone every summer since Katie's birth!) and I was totally bummed.  It didn't work out on our calendar to go elsewhere and the closest parish ended up not doing theirs either. :-(  So, my dear friend Rachael and I decided to do our own.  We took inspiration from other mothers who've done the same and from our years in Totus Tuus and thus VBS 2012 Yes, Lord!

Our week having preschool age children in mind was three mornings of Vacation Bible School rather than the whole week/day long.  We decided to focus on three Old Testament Bible Stories (Noah, Moses, David) and three coinciding mysteries of the Rosary (the first three Joyful Mysteries).  The day consisted of songs, prayer, lessons about each story and mystery, craft, snack and game.  It was enough for our crowd (5 yr. old, 4 yr. old, and two 2 yr. olds, plus a newborn and mom and a pregnant mom) who had occasional meltdowns or moments of being uncooperative (no, I didn't have the meltdown!).  The kids however had a BLAST!  And there were moments of great joy for us moms, too in seeing cooperation, learning and excitement about our faith!

We didn't take many pictures but here are a few off of my phone to share.  I wish we could have had video of the game station- what a hoot!  Especially the Crossing of the Red Sea!  I think we crossed it at least a dozen times before it got old and they wanted to play it again the next day!  If you're interested in our outline or anything like that I'd be happy to share.  Nothing too time consuming!
The stage was set!  Day one- Noah

A Work and Play Weekend

One thing I love is company!  And we were so excited to host friends of ours from up north here last weekend.  They're not new to Environs- through their parents friendships our kids have chummed around quite a bit.  Since my only camera these days is the smart phone- and that usually sits on the counter at home I was so excited to be sent pictures from our visit to post here.

There aren't any pictures of the work that was accomplished in their extended weekend stay so I'll just mention that first.  Here are the things I know of-- I'm sure there are things I'm missing that were on the 'guys' list.
-Trimmed Pine Grove
-Processed produce- a batch of marinara
-Worked on refurbishing the cider press
-Put up ceiling fan, and two can lights in the living room (and completed electrical)
-Weed whipped
-Ran to Menard's
-Rearranged master bedroom to accommodate baby's arrival

And now for the FUN!
-Played for numerous hours- toys, playdoh, swimming, scooters, 'mom and dad', flashlights etc.
-Went on a date (just the adults!) to the Potosi Brewery and Red Top
- Cooked and ate like royalty!
We wrapped up their stay with a little touring for the kiddos-
1- Put our feet in the Mississippi!  Visited O'Leary's Landing and Lock and Dam 11.  We saw a dead snake, a dead fish, a heron, a family of ducks and of course, put our toes in the muddy Miss!

JuJu and I at the Lock and Dam

Our friends getting their feet wet!

Climbing rocks to get to the water!
The kids and I- you can almost see our house in this picture!
2- Checked out John Deere though next time we'll have to stop at the construction dealer for some backhoe pictures.  The guide messed up but the kids didn't seem to mind!
3-Learned a bit about Dubuque's history and the nature of the area.  Made a stop at the Mines of Spain and the newly remodeled Nature Center.  Took a hike on the trails and had a little picnic, too!
Interactive bird calls for local birds!

The Fox tribe were the native settlers of this area.
Finding 'treasure' in a lead mine exhibit!  You had to crawl through a cave to get in here- that was a laugh for me anyway!

Listening to animal sounds- our favorite, the badger.  It kinda sounded like a mutant pig.  Katie thought it was hilarious!

More sounds and JuJu bird watching.
It was a wonderful weekend!  We're already looking forward to more company in August- are you on our calendar yet?!?!

The Week of the Fourth of July

Along with swimming lessons, this past week was a full one at our home.  Kurt's immediate family (his five siblings and most of their kids) was all here for the air show fireworks over the river on the 3rd along with quite a few other friends who came down to watch in our yard, on our deck and in our house with the a/c on.  We had company from the 2nd until just this morning.  It was a great time for the girls- cousins, cousins, cousins and Kurt and I appreciated all the help in the kitchen, working on the basement, in the garden and with other projects.  Here are a few pictures--wish I'd have taken more but oh well.

Cutting up smoked pork for the fireworks party! Yum!

Corn on the cob!!

Playing with cousins!!

Waiting for the fireworks- Julia asked to go to bed shortly after this picture.

Daddy's little baker

Homemade pretzels!

Playing with water balloons and swimming in the stock tank pool.
This week we'll wrap up swimming lessons (so far she's only had one day we went where it wasn't 90 degrees already at 9 a.m.) and work on processing some foods from the garden.  I've already got some peppers in the freezer (waiting for the tomatoes to ripen for salsa) and one batch of green beans to freeze.  Sounds like we'll be processing corn and some potatoes before the week is out for sure.  I'll have to get a picture of all the work Kurt and his brothers did in the basement this weekend! WOW!  And I've also got baby pictures to post from this week as I had an ultrasound and OB appointment, too.

Swimming Lessons

This week Kate is taking swimming lessons! She is excited about it and JuJu wishes that little sisters could take them too (next year).  As you can see from an earlier visit to a pool this summer they are like fish in the water!  I hope to take some pictures as the lessons progress.  I am excited for Kate to learn and have fun but am not excited for the schedule and planning around an activity that comes with the territory.  I'll offer it up. ;-)

Summer 2011 Update

My apologies to those of you who may be hanging on my every post our summer has been pretty busy and to be honest posting gets pushed down the list with swimming to do, people to visit, books to read and the whatnot.

We made a trip to Gramma and Grandpa's.  Got to do some fishing pontooning.

First Fish!

I don't know what the face is about.
We also had the chance to catch a Brewers game at Miller Park.  They swept the Twins that weekend.  The tailgating was wonderful the company terrific and the kids were great sports humoring the adults for a Sunday afternoon game.

My good friend Paula wanted to see her Twins play some place other than Target Field.  Miller Park was a great spot.

Jules didn't make to to the 7th inning stretch.

Master of the Grill

She loved the hotdog race and the ice cream.
More updates on the girls and us soon.  Happy 4th of July we're off the the church picnic!

Summer Reading....

Since I was young I've participated in Summer Reading at the local library (with a long break in college and graduate school- no time to read anything but textbooks then) and now with my girls look forward to summer for some enthusiastic reading.  This summer's theme is One World, Many Stories (albeit a little cheezy but not too bad).  The girls and I have started reading in earnest.  Kate is up to 21 books (with many minutes added in rereading them).
So I've picked up a few books thus far this summer that I'd like to recommend.

The first is God's Smuggler.  It is the life story of Brother Andrew, a Protesant missionary, who was called to bring the Word of God behind the Iron Curtain after World War II.  I heard about it from this post from Conversion Diary.  I don't often read non-fiction in my 'freetime' it just seem exhausting when I'm exhausted to try and think.  But I must say I really enjoyed it and recommend it.

Kate has been on a Laura Ingalls Wilder kick.  She really enjoys the easy reader versions of the Little House Series. Her favorites are the stories taking place in the Big Woods of Wisconsin.  Because of this recent interest of hers I discovered another famous Wisconsin girl, Caddie Woodlawn.   This young tomboy has adventures with her brothers around their home in Northern WI.  I enjoyed each little tale of this young girl's journey to adulthood.  After finishing it I found out that the Dunn County Historical Site keeps the Woodlawn home at a wayside near Menomonee and that there is a sequel.  I am looking forward to reading these books with Katie and Julia eventually.  There are even paper dolls of Caddie to print and play with at home.

Finally, a friend of mine read and recommended The Noticer.  I read this book in one Sunday afternoon.  It was one of those books that I wanted to read excerpts to my husband and say, "Listen to this...isn't it great?"  (I tried to at one point but he fell asleep shortly into one chapter.)  There were countless times that the lessons for living shared resonated with my experience.

Currently, I am listening to The False Princess on CD, so far, SO GOOD!

Blessed John Paul II

My personal story with Blessed John Paul II began the summer of 1993.  I was just out of 8th grade and my mom finagled me a spot on our Diocesan lead trip to Denver, CO for World Youth Day.  There were 10 of us from our small parish that made the trip.
I'm on the far left in the back.
It was a LONG bus ride.  My strongest memories of the trip are of time spent in Mile High Stadium where the Holy Father  and various bishops spoke to us.  The theme song I remember was 'We are One Body' and the gospel message  "I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full" (Jn 10:10)  The cheers for the World Youth Day cross being carried into the stadium and the cheers for the Holy Father as he entered in the popemobile gave me chills. Oh, and the weather that day was rainy and when the pope came, the clouds cleared the sun shone and there was a rainbow over the scene- a coincidence only God could come up with!

I have pictures of the Holy Father's helicopter flying him into the stadium and these 'close' pictures of him on the jumbo-tron.
As with every WYD the highlight of the week long pilgrimage is a hike out to a field where pilgrims will spent the night on the ground in vigil for the Sunday morning Mass with the Pope.

Here's a shot I dug up of the pilgrims hiking out of Denver to our field.
Looking back at this pilgrimage, that summer was a point of conversion for me.  The Catholicity of the faith became so obvious in the gathering of cultures of the young faithful from all over the world.   The faith became my own.  It penetrated my life at school and at home in ways that it hadn't before and in a real sense I grew up as I entered high school that fall.  I began to defend the Church and her teachings at my public school- I wrote a letter to the high school paper about swearing and recall asking a friend, who was making fun of the pope to not do so.

In college, I grew even closer to JPII- reading some of his writings and seeking like him to be "Totus Tuus"  I was especially fond of Familaris Consortio. I was able to make another pilgrimage to hear him speak at St. Peter's in Rome at the end of the Jubilee Year.  [I couldn't find pictures from that one].

I began working that summer in youth ministry and had big plans lead a pilgrimage of my own to World Youth Day in Toronto, Canada in 2002.  There were 20 of us, including my mom this time!  She encouraged me to go that first time and I returned the favor this time around and had her chaperone.  It was AWESOME to share a pilgrimage experience with the youth of my parish.

This time we got a lot closer as the Holy Father came through.

Our zone in the field was prime real estate.  You can see the stage behind us.  The headphones with A.M. radio were treasures, too, especially if you're rusty on other languages.

I am third in on the back left.  My mom is in the back to the right of the sign in the WYD hat.

The Holy Father had aged since I saw him in Denver.

This time my memories are a little firmer.  There are two stories revolving around bathrooms (maybe for another post) and I remember the theme and the experience of pilgrimage (not to be confused with vacation) as a spiritual reality.  John Paul II brought me to tears more than once on that trip with his words to me and the youth of the Church.

I had the opportunity to start studying for my Masters in Theology the fall following that trip.  And that first year took The Writings of John Paul II as a course!  My studies lead to a move to Stevens Point Pacelli and as co-Director of Campus Ministry once again I would get to make a pilgrimage to World Youth Day.   Our plans were already in place on April 2, 2005 when John Paul II died.  The Holy Father had already written his message for the celebration of the 20th WYD in Cologne, Germany that summer.  As part of our trip we were able to stop at the Vatican and visit the tomb of the late John Paul II.

The grave of Pope John Paul II
Camping out for the vigil, 2005.
And the 800,000 plus young people gathered that week- especially at the vigil remembered the legacy of the previous pope as we prayed with Benedict XVI.  I am part of what some call the JPII generation, I grew up  with John Paul II as pope.

Tomorrow, May 1, 2011 John Paul II will be declared blessed.  And though he is not John Paul the Great, yet, GREAT has been his influence on me and my spiritual pilgrimage in the Church and for that I am grateful.

Blessed John Paul II, pray for us!
