The Cedar Tree (a poem by Jessica Powers)

So, it has been a long winter here.  I still haven't gotten back in the swing of regular posts on the blog.  It seems the arrival of Erik began the wanning and then with Katie starting school and new routines for us here at home and a fall and winter including lice, illness and our fair share of snow.  Well, you get the idea.

Anyway, I picked up a discarded book of Wisconsin Poets and Poetry from the library last week.  This particular work moved me.  And, since the littles were finally moved to nap at the same time, supper was settled, and I had a moment I thought I would share.  Enjoy!

THE CEDAR TREE

In the beginning, in the unbeginning
Of endlessness and of eternity
God saw this tree.
He saw these cedar branches bending low
Under the full exhaustion of the snow.
And since He set no wind of day to rising,
This burden of beauty and this burden of cold
(Whether the wood breaks or the branches hold)
Must be of His devising.

There is a cedar similarly decked
Deep in the winter of my intellect
Under the snow, the snow
The scales of light its limitations tell.

I clasp this thought: from all eternity
God Who is good looked down upon this tree,
White in the weighted air,
And of another cedar reckoned well.
He knew how much each tree, each twig could bear;
He counted every snowflake as it fell.

Apple Cider (A flashback post from Fall 2013)

We had a great time honing our cider making skills this past fall.  With plenty of cider pressed and plenty of fun had (and only one near trip to the emergency room and one person passing out on the job!) it was a great season.

Hauling tree falls from the orchard in the sled.  Yes, she's silly!
Checking out how this thing works.
Loading the hopper to crush the apples!
A full basket to press and Bug starts sampling!
Crushing!
Sampling!
Everyone wants to try a taste!
Kate with the hard cider attempts in the background.
Manning the press!
Emptying the basket
A full basket ready to be pressed.

Advent Tea

The kids and I (and their dolls) were invited to an Advent Tea the Monday before Christmas. It was a beautiful (freezing negative temps) morning and they really had a great time with all the other girls!

Julia and I found a way to stay warm on a COLD day.
