Visitors always welcome....

For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed having company. I used to connive with my friends sleepovers as a kid (its about as sneaky as I got, honest). I have always enjoyed impromptu dinner parties, folks that drop in off the highway (yes, Fran, that's you if you're reading this) and guests that come announced for any period of time. My charism is not Franciscan on many accounts but St. Francis and I do agree on the vow of hospitality. So, readers, if you're in the area and wish to drop in please do so! Though don't expect a tidy house because I might be trying a method my brother, John recommended- don't wash dishes or laundry until you need them. Can you tell he's single?

Speaking of visitors, I just received some great pictures of some company I had right before Easter. A close friend and her kiddos (3) came down for a few days. I was tickled that they made the trip and all in all we deemed it a huge success. Her husband even sent a meal for us (company that cooks for you!?!)!

Here are some shots of the fun we had together.

The girls dyed eggs during nap time.

Someone thinks Katie is cute!

Playing with the great selection of toys.

Our Easter baskets...ready a little early.
A trip to downtown Dubuque with stops at the Fenlon Place Elevator, Pixie Stix Toy Store and the ice cream shoppe.
Riding the elevator!

The view from the top!
Helping Angie in the kitchen...you can't have too many cooks in my opinion. ;-)
I love the looks on their faces!

More kitchen help!
Playing dress-up at a friends house- 8 kids 5 adults.

Nice outfit!

Swinging....he couldn't be happier with all these ladies around.

The teeter totter was a big hit.

Katie agrees with her mom, "We should have company more often!"

Thanks for the visit Cibarics! And we're looking forward to seeing you this weekend Julie!

Uncle Bob's 60th Birthday!

I mentioned that on Good Friday we had traveled to Milwaukee to celebrate my Uncle Bob's 60th birthday. Family traveled from Colorado, California and Illinois to celebrate. I wanted to post some pictures my cousin Marla sent of the occasion. It was really special to get together with the Harris Family (since we don't see each other nearly as often as we should). The fish at Wauwatosa's Alioto's Restaurant was awesome and we had a whole room for the party!

Katie, Me, Sherri, Kaylee and my Mom.

My cousin Jeff, brother John and my Dad shooting the breeze

The Harris siblings- Trent Luck (the baby), Todd Lewis (the serious uncle), and Trudy Lynn (she's married to Bob).

The Harris crowd was well represented. Here's the 'fun' table!

Kaylee and Mom playing peek.

Coffee?

The cake...we'd been fasting all day for this!

The birthday boy blowing out the candles. Happy Birthday Uncle Bob! Thanks for giving us so many reasons to celebrate!

I had to add just one more... this is baby Ethan (my cousin Marla's little guy) and my Aunt Trudy. We didn't have any pictures of him partying with us but isn't he so cute! And I think for the most part his dad, Jason was behind the camera so he escapes the blog debut, but thanks for taking all these great pictures!!

Easter

We had a fantastic Easter Weekend with family and friends. My folks, and John, Tom and Trina and the kiddos met me in Madison on Friday and we drove to Milwaukee for my Uncle Bob's 60th birthday party (Pictures to come soon- right Marla and Jason?). It was a lot of fun even on Good Friday. Afterward we headed to Kieler. The weekend was filled with Easter fun. Good food made mostly by Kurt was a highlight. I love my love's cooking! Activities for the kids- walking, strolling, park time, egg hunt, dying eggs, resurrection rolls, Wii and just enjoying being cousins. We got to go to Easter Vigil it was beautiful and the kids did fine. Lots of late nights and much activity. Kate was lonesome after it was all over yesterday afternoon. Here are some picture highlights.

We once again celebrated Katie's birthday. This time with my family. She and her Uncle Tom shared a cake (Happy 28th Tom).

Say "Hammock!" Yes, that's why we have our mouths open. The weather was nice enough to get the lawn furniture out and till the garden.

Dying eggs. Notice the beautiful flowers my love got for me! They bloomed on Holy Saturday and continue to look so springy!

Tom and Kaylee dying eggs.

Easter egg hunt! Our church youth group hosted a fun day for the kiddos on Saturday with crafts, a bounce house and of course an egg hunt.

Strolling...Trev and Kate.

Wii- we're all addicted.
At the park on Easter morning the girls in were in spring rain coats and sharing a swing.
So big!!
Katie and I on the slide.

Hopefully, I'll be able to post more soon.
Happy Easter everyone! He is risen! Alleluia! Alleluia!

One year ago today....errr, yesterday

I, obviously had intended to post this yesterday but amidst the hustle and bustle of the day did not make the time to finish writing it. I have had the pictures ready for nearly a week! Yes, I am a mother of a ONE year old! Yikes! I wanted to take a moment and write down Kate's birth story while I still have some vague memory of it so for your reading enjoyment....

On the morning of April 3rd, 2008 I woke with an urgency (7:00 AM yes, I had to go to the bathroom!). We just finished re-plumbing our upstairs bathroom so it was time for this baby to come out. Natalie, our live-in friend at the time recalls that I was up and moving before she was that morning though if you know her that isn't all that unusual. We headed to Mass that morning in Kieler (8:15 AM). And I announced to her that I thought today would be the day the baby came and entreated her to run a few errands with me before that happened. Next, we headed to the chiropractor (9:30 AM) for my aching hips and lower back. Then to the library (10:15 AM) in Cuba City to return my late books and check out a supply of books and movies for when the baby came, to pass the time. We stopped by my friend Rachael's in town and she invited us to go for a walk. So we WALKED! (11:00 AM) If I recall it was a pretty brisk walk for a "over-due" pregnant lady. The weather that day was spring like we were finally losing some of the huge piles of snow we'd stored that winter. It was warm enough for just a fleece jacket and I think the sun even peeked out that morning. Natalie and I were invited to stay for lunch (12:00 NOON) and by the end of the meal I could not sit any longer. I finally called Kurt at work. He says I didn't tell him that I was in labor just that I thought that the baby was going to come today and he should come home 'early'. I really don't remember what I said. Anyway, Natalie and I headed back to our house in Kieler, this time with her behind the wheel. We started to watch one of the movies from the library and I thought I'd move things along if I could with the side lying position we learned in Bradley Birthing classes. I think it worked. I couldn't make it through the movie. The pain in my back was so uncomfortable I decided maybe a warm bath would help. Shortly after I hopped in the tub Kurt came home (2:30 PM) after much urging from his then boss (THANKS John!). With my coach there we started timing contractions. They were close together but not lasting very long. We called the hospital (3:00 PM) wondering if this was the real thing. They weren't much help at deciding that for us. And said it was up to us if we made the drive. By 4:00 PM we decided to head to Lancaster, figuring if it didn't work out at the hospital we could use our Happy Joe's gift certificate and have our 'last' date. Labor progressed in the car and when we arrived at Grant Regional Hospital at 4:30 PM I couldn't make it down the hallway to the maternity ward without stopping to catch my breath. Kurt and I still were in denial that this was actually happening. We left the bags in the car (including all the packed supplies and camera) figuring there would be ample opportunity to go and get them later. As it happened we never headed back to the car. After 4 and a half hours of labor, me pushing the last half hour, our little girl was born! Kathryn Mary Snyder weighed in at 9 lbs, 7 oz. and was 21.5 inches long. She, as you can see from pictures, had a full head of hair that she never lost. And for the first twenty minutes of her life outside the womb she cried- her mother's daughter, Kurt said.

The next day of course, we got out the camera and had quite a few visitors stop in starting with our friend Louie and traffic was pretty constant till we were allowed to leave at 9 PM on the 4th. It was GREAT to get home with our little one. Kurt had a firefighters test that Saturday so my folks and favorite uncle John came down to stay with us through the weekend. The Snyders were able to stop in at our home and meet number 15 of the grandkids on that side. Later that month my mom was able to be with us for a week and help out. And Tom and Trina and family came to meet their first niece/cousin. She was a big hit!

I was perusing through a years worth of pictures and picked out a few highlights. Most of which I haven't posted here before.

Reading Jane Austin with Gramma Ann. Gotta love Pride and Prejudice.

Listening to a story from Grandpa Trent. She still seems so little here!

Her one month pictures! This is her ridiculously good looking pose.

Here's the girl at 7 months. We took these as Christmas pictures.

With Great Gramma Helen in matching blue velor playing dominoes.

Katie with Grandma Mary, look at those cheeks!

On her first airplane flight to Phoenix. Dad is so proud.

And here's one with me, our self portrait.

Finally, a few shots from yesterday. We had a fish fry at our house for some friends and family to celebrate the big day. Kate especially liked sitting with the other kids. She didn't want to sit with me or in her chair.

Kate on Rachael's lap eating her ice cream cake that Dad made. And Jeffery watching closely.

With new puzzle pieces- fun!

Kate with her new doll "Bob". She can already say his name!

Happy Birthday Katie! Dad and I love you immensely and have loved you since God blessed us with your existence! We are so glad you have made us a family. Life was not nearly as exciting without you and we're looking forward to celebrating your birth for years to come!

Bran Muffins

By request via facebook...the best refrigerator bran muffin recipe. It is my favorite because we used to make them as kids for hot breakfast in the morning. We'd turn on the oven when we woke up. My mom would have a container in the fridge and my brothers and I would dole out batter for a dozen muffins. By the time we were ready for school and my parents were up we'd have a hot breakfast! They are the best with butter and honey!

2 c. of All-Bran Bran Buds or Bob's Red Mill Wheat Bran [the original recipe called for 100% Bran cereal which is not on the market anymore so the recipe isn't quite the same.]
2 c. boiling water
1 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
4 eggs
1 qt. buttermilk
5 c. flour
5 tsp. baking soda
4 c. All-Bran Original cereal

Pour boiling water over the 2 c. cereal and let stand. Cream together shortening, sugar, salt. Add and mix eggs. Add buttermilk and water/bran mix. Mix flour and baking soda and add to above. Finally, add All-Bran Original cereal and mix until covered. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 min. This makes a batch of muffin mix that stores well in an ice cream pail or other large sealed container. It keeps 6-7 weeks in the refrigerator.

An update that's well overdue...

Greetings from Kieler and environs....
I have been taking a bit of a break from the computer during Lent. Not full fledged fasting but nonetheless a break and so my blogging these past weeks has been non-existent. So here's an update from us in a different format

The Snyder Top 5 (of recent)

5. Katie has started to show her temper. I daresay she didn't get it from me but nobody is confessing that Kurt had a temper so I'm beginning to wonder. Certainly, she puts on her best face in public but I have proof for those who would believe she's a mild mannered little girl all of the time. Touche!

4. We've discovered that Kate would rather eat table food than 'baby' food. She wants what you've got on your plate. Her favorites- cheese, crackers, mac 'n cheese, and grapes. Ugh! It's a good thing she's still nursing for nutrition sake!

3. Kate and I spent a week up north at my folks. We enjoyed time with the cousins, uncles, aunty Trina and Gramma and Grandpa Harris and Great Gramma Gelhaus. Here are some of the photo highlights.

2. Find the strangest things fun. Kate enjoys playing in our folded laundry. She especially likes folded socks and breast pads. As weird as it it seems she sorts through the rest to find them! As she's definitely walking with assistance of furniture she also enjoys getting into the folded clothes in her drawers if they're left open.

1. We've caught a bit of a cold. Both Kate and I have runny noses and she really doesn't like me wiping hers. But surprisingly she's not been deterred in playing being her regular self for the most part. A few more tears here and there and that temper coming to the surface but we'll be on the mend in no time! I think she looks more miserable than she feels- honest!
